Hai Zhang is a Chinese-born photographer with a Master’s degree of Architecture. While taking photographs and practicing in architecture, Hai Zhang has been living and working in New York, Washington, DC, Miami, Florida and Alabama.

From the first solid body of work, “APHASIA” to the newest projects, "TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD " and “CHINESE,OVERSHADOWED BY CHINA” , Hai Zhang has been consistently and closely observing and examining humanity, whether focusing on an intimate personal subject or taking wider concerns of society. While the photos are as much about the photographer as they are about the subject, the images could not be more honest. Merging the personal experience with the subject has added weight to the works. Rather than unilateral presentations, these photographs suggest dialogues.

Hai Zhang's photographic works have been exhibited in Whitney Museum of American Art, Kansas State University, Asian American Art Center and other galleries and institutional venues in New York City, Washington, DC, and China. At the end of 2007, Hai Zhang worked with the acclaimed artist/filmmaker Javier Tellez on the movie - Letter on the Blind for the Use of Those Who See, which was featured in Whitney Biennial, 2008. In Aug 2008, Hai Zhang was awarded Artist in Residence of Monte Azul Center of Art and Design in Costa Rica. His works have appeared in publications in the US and China, and included in the private and public collections in the United States and Great Britain. Currently, Hai Zhang resides in New York City and works on a long term social minded photography/architecture project between the US and China.
