From 2006 to 2021, I made numerous trips to Alabama to take photographs. I visited the same towns, families, and people repeatedly.
Based on this 15-year journey, the book “What If” is a reflection and continuation of a journey that was often puzzling and self-conflicting, yet ever-evolving in a different form of art. I purposely folded the photographs in the middle to break down and expand the boundaries of the images. Through the juxtaposition of the photographs, the book creates a series of collages that transcend time and space. The choice of loose binding is instrumental in allowing readers to create their own arrangements of the images. In the end, the book aims to seek a question to ask.
The 44-page book, printed in Spain with a limited edition of 600, is published in collaboration with Miyako Yoshinaga Gallery in New York City.
