Hai Zhang is a Chinese-born artist based in New York. He is interested in photography as a vital tool to investigate the context. He makes all applications as integral investigative process to examine the subjects and photography itself. Zhang is also interested in applying photography to various medias such as collage, artist book, video and installation. Zhang has exhibited internationally in the museums and galleries in New York, Europe, Russia and Asia. He was nominated for the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize 2014. In 2021, with Troy University in Troy, Alabama, Hai Zhang was the co-recipient of a grant from Alabama State Council of Art. In 2022, Zhang was the visiting scholar at the India China Institute at The New School to create a digital archive of his decade long photographic project in China. Zhang’s photographs and collages based on his decade-long project in Alabama was included in the permanent collection by the US Library of Congress. His artist book is included in the collection of the Asia Art Archive in America and the library of the Queens Museum. Hai Zhang is a part-time faculty member at Parsons School of Design in New York City.
